The Documentation Center for the History of Cableways is a non-profit association, whose main statutory purposes are:
1) Promote the creation of an Italian National Museum of Cableways
2) Recover and preserve the technical and documentary material of historical interest within the framework of the development of this transport system
This initiative stems from the remark that there are museums in Italy dedicated to almost all means of transport: railways, aviation, automobiles, naval, motorbikes, bicycles, ski museums…, whereas there are still no organized exhibitions on cableways in general.
The invention of cableway also contributed to changing the modes of moving people and goods: think for example of the network of ropeways built along the Italian-Austrian front during the First World War. But its greatest technological development occurred when, in the first half of the 20th century, it became the means that allowed lovers of skiing – a sport born in the Alps between the 19th and 20th centuries – to move around easily on ski runs.
